Group lessons are available for beginning students in several areas. Group classes establish a firm foundation in playing/singing, they're lots of fun, and you'll learn to play/sing and finish a song or 3. Group lesson students commit for 3 months at a time (this is to insure the group won't have to cancel if less than 4 students continue). All students must work on the same music in group lessons. 4 is the minimum required to make a group class. Group lessons average 4 fifty-five minute lessons in a month and one of the lessons in the 3 month session is a master class or a recital.
Group lessons can be useful, but only for the first months of music lessons, a year at the most. Individuals progress more slowly in any group lesson because the teacher's attention is divided between several students, thus having less time for individual issues. Group lessons must focus on the "average" student and so a portion of students are left behind and a portion are bored and ready to move forward. When comparing lessons be sure to clarify if the lessons you are checking out are private or group - and be sure the private lessons are truly one teacher and only one student in the room. Be aware that any studio makes more per hour for group lessons (because there are multiple students in the lesson), so there is always an incentive to push group lessons.
